Duncombe, John Francis

lawyer, legislator, lecturer, was born Oct. 22, 1831, in Erie county, Pa. He received his education at the Alleghany college, Pennsylvania, from which institution he received the degrees of A. B. and A. M.; received the degree of A. M. from the Center college, Ky.; and the degree of LL. D. *from Griswold college, Iowa. He has served as a representative and senator in the Iowa legislature for seven terms, general and special sessions. For eighteen years he was regent of the Iowa State university, and for twelve years lectured on Law of Railroads in that institution.

For twenty-four years he was curator of the State Historical society of Iowa. During the Spirit Lake Indian war he served as captain of company B. He has been general attorney of the Mason City and Fort Dodge Railroad company, and was the organizer of that company, and for thirty years he has been district attorney of the Central Railroad company, which position he still holds.
