Dobbs, Arthur
governor, author, was born in 1684 in Ireland. He was the author of An Account of the Countries Adjoining Hudson's Bay; Trade and Improvement of Ireland; and Captain Middleton's Defense. In 1744 he emigrated to North Carolina; and was chosen governor in 1754, serving until his death. He died March 28, 1765, in Town Creek, N. C.
DOCKERY, ALEXANDER MONROE, physician, congressman, was born Feb. 11, 1845, in Daviess county, Mo. In 1874 he moved to Gallatin, Mo., and assisted in organizing the Farmers' Exchange bank, of which organization he was cashier until elected to congress. He was one of the curators of the university of Missouri from 1872 to 1882, and in 1870, 1871 and 1872 president of the board of education of Chillicothe, Mo. He was a member of the city council of Gallatin for the five years previous to April, 1883, serving the last two years as mayor. He was elected to the forty-eighth, forty-ninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second, fifty-third, fiftyfourth and fifty-fifth congresses as a democrat.
