Cummings, Joseph Franklin

soldier, educator, was born July 16, 1851, in Brownsville, Texas. In 1876 he graduated from the United States Military academy of West Point, N. Y.; and during 1876- 83 was an officer in the United States cavalry. In 1883-86 he was railroading in Mexico; in 1886-88 was a teacher in the public school at Galveston, Texas; and since that time has been superintendent of public schools in Brownsville. In 1887 he received the thanks of Gen. George Crook in a general order for the capture of an Indian village.
