Cummings, Amos J
soldier, journalist, congressman, author, was born May 15, 1841, in Conklin, N. Y. He was sergeant-major in the twenty-sixth New Jersey regiment of infantry, secondbrigade, second division, sixth corps, army of the Potomac; and received the congressional medal of honor for gallantry on the battlefield. He was editor of the Evening Sun when elected to the fiftieth congress. He declined a renomination, preferring to give his whole attention to editorial work. He was elected to the fifty-first congress to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Samuel Sullivan Cox; and was elected to the fifty-second, fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses and was re-elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a democrat. He is the author of Horace Greeley Campaign Songster; Sayings of Uncle Rufus; and Ziska Letters.
