Croswell, Charles M

lawyer, state senator, governor, was born Oct. 31, 1825, in Newburg, N. Y. He was elected register of deeds of Lewanee county, Mich., in 1850, and re-elected in 1852; in 1854 was a member and secretary of the state convention at Jackson, Mich., from which sprung the republican party. In 1862 he was appointed city attorney, and the same year was elected mayor of Adrian. He was a state senator in 1863, 1865, and 1867; and was speaker of the state house of representatives in 1873. He was elected governor of Michigan in 1876, and re-elected in 1878. He died Dec. 13, 1886, in Adrian, Mich.
