Craig, Samuel Thomas

soldier, merchant, was born March 22, 1835, in Corydon, Ind. In his youth he learned the trade of a carriage maker; and in 1860 crossed the Rocky mountains. He served gallantly through the civil war, enlisting as a private in company H, first regiment Iowa volunteer cavalry; was promoted through all grades and brevetted brigadier-general. He participated in nearly all of the scouting and battles with the enemy in southwestern Missouri, and in Arkansas and other states; crossed the Ozark mountains; and was mustered out in 1866. He remained one year in Texas, and then returned home to Iowa.

He was county auditor for four terms; and has principally been engaged in mercantile business at Albia, Iowa.
