Cox, William Ruffin

soldier, planter, legislator, congressman, was born March 11, 1832, in Scotland Neck, N. C. He received his education at the Franklin college, Tennessee, and at the Lebanon Law school. During the war he became brigadier-general in the confederate service. He attained success as a lawyer, and was solicitor of the sixth judicial circuit court. He a served with distinction as judge of the fourth judicial district court of North Carolina. He was a member of the fortyseventh, forty-eighth and forty-ninth congresses; and served as secretary of the United States senate. He has been a successful planter and is now largely engaged in agriculture.
