Cotton, Aylett R
educator, lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 29, 1826, in Austintown, Ohio. He removed to Iowa in 1844, and crossed the plains to California in 1849, and returned to Iowa in 1851. He was appointed judge of Clinton county in 1851, and was prosecuting attorney of the same county in 1854. He was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1857, and was a member of the state legislature in 1868 and 1870, serving as speaker. He was elected to the forty-second and forty-third congresses as a republican.
