Coburn, John
lawyer, legislator, jurist, was born Oct. 27, 1825, in Indianapolis, Ind. He served as a union soldier during the civil war, and was in command of the thirty-third regiment Indiana volunteer infantry; and served with distinction. After the war he was elected circuit judge; and in 1866 was elected to congress, and served for four terms in succession. He took an active part in the important debates of reconstruction, public debt, currency, military affairs, election laws and tariff. He was the author of the measure for printing the rebellion records, and carried through the house the law for soldiers' headstones. He served as one of the supreme judges of the territory of Montana; and has filled various other public positions of honor.
