Clymer, George
signer of the declaration of independence, was born in 1739 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was one of the first continental treasurers; in 1776 was a member of congress, and signed the declaration of independence. He was a member of the old congress in 1780, and a representative, under the constitution from 1789 to 1791, from Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the convention which formed the federal constitution, and signed that instrument. In 1791 he was placed at the head of the excise department in Pennsylvania; and in 1796 was sent to Georgia to negotiate a treaty with the Creek and Cherokee Indians. He was afterwards president of the Philadelphia bank and of the Academy of Fine Arts. He died Jan. 23, 1813, in Morrisville, Pa.
