Carroll, Charles
of Carrollton, signer of the declaration of independence, was born Sept. 20, 1737, in Annapolis, Md.
He became known as an advocate for liberty, and was one of the ablest political writers of Maryland; and in 1776 was elected a delegate to the old congress, and subscribed his name to the declaration of independence. At the time of his death he was the last surviving signer of that document. In 1778 he left congress and devoted himself to the councils of his native state. In 1789 he was elected a senator to the new congress. He died Feb. 14, 1832, in Baltimore, Md.
