Carpenter, Cyrus Clay

soldier, congressman, governor, was born Nov. 24, 1820, in Hartford, Pa. In 1857 he was elected to the state legislature; in 1861 entered the army, and as brevet colonel rendered important service during the war. In 1866 he was elected register of the state land office at Des Moines, and was re-elected. In 1871 he was elected governor of Iowa. He was a state commissioner of railroads in 1878, and was elected a representative from Iowa to the forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses as a republican.
