Calkins, Franklin Welles
author, was born June 5, 1855, in Iowa county, Wis. He attended the Iowa Agricultural college in 1876;. taught school and read law for the succeeding three years.
In 1880 he began contributing stories of adventure and sketches of western life and character in the Youth's Companion and other prominent publications.
He is the author of work entitled Tales of the West, in three volumes; and more than three hundred of his serials and short stories have been published.
His power of vivid narration is conceded by the critics to be of the highest order of talent, and his stories are valuable for their lifelikeness and their truthfulness. to character and environment. a
