Avery, John
physician, surgeon, congressman, was born Feb. 29, 1824, in Watertown, N. Y. He removed to Michigan in 1836; graduated from Cleveland Medical college in 1850, and has been in the active practice of his profession since that time. He was assistant surgeon and surgeon of the twenty-first Michigan infantry; served in the army of the Cumberland in Kentucky and Tennessee, and was with Sherman on his march to the sea.
He was member of the state legislature from Montcalm county in 1869- 70; was appointed member of the state board of health in 1880 and reappointed in 1886, and for the last six years has been president of the board. He has been a United States pension examiner for the last sixteen years, member of the Stanton board of United States examiners for six years, and president of the board for the last three years; has been member of the school board and common council of the city of Greenville; and has been annually elected for twelve years supervisor of the first ward. He was elected to the fifty-third and re-elected to the fifty-fourth congress as a republican.
