ANTHONY, ANDREW VARICK STOUT, artist, was born in 1835 in New York city. Among his best-known works are the illustrations for Whittier's Snow Bound; Ballads of New England; and Mabel Martin; Longfellow's Skeleton in Armor; and Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter.
