Angell, James Burrill

educator, college president, diplomatist, was born Jan. 7, 1829, in Scituate, R. I. He graduated from the Brown university in 1849; and during 1855-60 filled the chair of modern languages in that institution. In 1866 he became president of the university of Vermont; and since 1871 has been president of the university of Michigan.

He has served as United States minister to China; and in 1897 was appointed United States minister to Turkey. He is the author of Manual of French Literature; and Progress in International Law.
